Ben is passionate about helping and protecting vulnerable children and families. He is a Registered Social worker (20 years). As an experienced senior manager in all aspects of children’s social care (8+ years), he has a proven track record of effective operational, strategic and systemic leadership and management and expertise in developing and improving statutory social work services for children and families.
Ben is the Service Director for Cornwall’s Children and Family Services. They were rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in October 2019, placing them in the top 10% of children’s social care services nationally. They are the only ‘Outstanding’ Local Authority in the South West.
Ben is Cornwall Council’s lead for safeguarding children, the Agency Decision Maker for adoption and fostering, and the Chair of Cornwall’s Youth Justice Board. He has responsibility for the full range of social care services delivered by the Council including Family Hub services, Early Help, Family Assessment and Support, Child Protection and Children in Care. He heads Cornwall’s implementation of the Family Partnership Model, and of Signs of Safety as the core multi agency approach to working with families and managing risk where children are in need of help and protection. As the senior officer for missing children and child exploitation he led a cultural change in the way we help and protect children and young people at risk of, and experiencing, exploitation.
